As the fifth event of the “Petőfi Mirages” series, András Mink discusses the historical role of the Petőfi Circle with historian János M. Rainer.

There is no doubt that the series of public debates launched in March 1956, after repeated prohibitions and obstructions, organized by the Petőfi Circle, a youth organization of the Communist Party, within the framework of the Democratic Youth Association (DISZ), can be seen as a direct precursor to the outbreak of the revolution. At the same time, the Petőfi Circle and those who took part in its public debates did not aim to overthrow the system but to reform it, democratize it, or start the process of destalinization. The discussion will examine the history and historical role of the Circle.
András Mink talks to historian János M. Rainer.
