Béla Tarr, Journey on the Great Plain (1995)

The screening of Béla Tarr’s film “Journey through the Great Plain” (1995) will be followed by a discussion with the film’s creators, with music by Mihály Víg. Prior to this, a guided tour with András Mink of the exhibition “Petőfi for All Seasons”. The tenth event in the “Petőfi Mirages” program series.

“Immediately after the filming of Sátántangó (1994), Béla Tarr commemorated the poet Petőfi with the short film Journey through the Great Plain (1995). This film is a side note, a wink, in which Tarr points out his common passion with the poet, the endlessness of the plains, the sea-like plain landscape of the lowlands. The Lowlands in the village of Sátántangó shows the endlessness and fateful destiny of a state, a symbolic abstraction rich in socio-political imagery. Although the setting and the medium of Journey on the Plain are similar, the Plain in this case condenses as a concrete geographical space what is similar in Tarr and Petőfi. In dark pubs and dilapidated rooms, Mihály Víg recites Petőfi quietly, revealing heavy burdens behind the light lines.” (source)
