The Chalk Circle
Theater Performance
“People in need, help the people in need.”
Gruse is a simple kitchen maid, distinguished not by her special goodness, but by action itself, a decision made in an emergency. She is handed a child, the governor’s child, whom the rebels will be looking for. Gruse puts him down, then picks him up and runs - for a child who is not hers.
Based on Bertolt Brecht's drama The Caucasian Chalk Circle, this classroom performance explores the identity-forming power of helping others, and the responsibility of choice. Gruse walks through the emotional and physical journey of adoption and the struggle of love, through renunciations and sacrifices. Hers is a journey of the burden of risk and responsibility she has to carry in order to be good, a coming-of-age story. This is the thousand-year-old story of the chalk circle, with epic dialectics for four actors, ragged Georgian folk music, and school spaces.
