Pál Schiffer (1939–2001) was a leading figure in Hungarian sociological documentary film. From 1970, he worked for several years with sociologist István Kemény and a team of mostly oppositional social researchers belonging to Kemény’s circle, including Zsolt Csalog, Gábor Havas, and Ottilia Solt. The sociologists were investigating the housing, working, and schooling conditions of the Roma in Hungary when the group was joined by documentary filmmaker Pál Schiffer.

Schiffer’s documentaries in the classic sociological documentary genre are pieces of early collaboration between sociologists and filmmaker Schiffer. In 1974, building on Kemény’s study and in close collaboration with the sociologist, Schiffer embarked on his first documentary feature film, “Cséplő Gyuri”. This film is one of the first Hungarian works of so-called situation documentary filmmaking, and one of the lasting works of the Budapest School. The exhibition presents the story of the making and reception of the film “Cséplő Gyuri”, as well as a selection of stills from Schiffer’s previous documentaries.

Thanks to István Jávor and Tamás Féner for allowing us to exhibit their photos.

The exhibition is accompanying the conference Poverty Revisited. Conference in Memoriam István Kemény.
