How will the role of librarians change and diversify in future academic libraries? Librarians will take a more central role in terms of providing thematic and technical expertise, cataloging, and facilitating learning, teaching and research. Come and meet us at the Bibliotheca exhibition at OSA Archivum for training sessions on new resources, such as online bibliographic management software and open access sources.

CEU librarians will give a presentation at OSA on academic research tools, including open source and subscribed resources. The aim is to demonstrate how open sources can work together with subscribed scholarly databases and web scale discovery services to facilitate teaching, learning and research.

In the interactive part of the session, the librarians will help visitors build their own research databases by using personal bibliographic management software such as Zotero. They will also offer advice on making online research more effective.

Structure of the session:

  1. A very brief introduction to Open Access Resources, including search engines (Virtual Learning Resources, The Academic Index), a computable knowledge engine (Wolfram Alpha), union catalogs (the Open Library and OAIster) and directories of repositories (Digital Library of the Commons Repository, OpenDOAR). Format: Prezi. Time: 10 minutes
  2. Web Scale Discovery Service (WSD). WSD is one of the newest library technology trends, a pre-harvested central index coupled with a richly featured discovery layer providing a single search across a library’s local, open access, and subscription collections. Format: Prezi. Time: 10 minutes
  3. Bibliographic Manager Software: Synapsen, MyEndnote Web, Mendeley, Zotero. How to collect, organize, manage and share bibliographic references and create bibliographies automatically for papers and dissertations, using word processor plugins. Format: Prezi. Time: 10 + 15 minutes for a practice demonstration
  4. Helpdesk for exhibition visitors: assistance and advice on using bibliographic manager software by using personal laptops or the dedicated computer in the exhibition room. Format: face to face consultation. Time: 75 minutes

Presenters: Angelika Gulyás and Ivett Molnár
Venue: OSA Archivum/ 2nd floor, Meeting Room

The program is in English (face to face consultations are available in Hungarian, too).
