YELLOW STAR HOUSES
Closing Event of the Public History Project
June 21, 2014 is the 70th anniversary of the forced mass relocation of 220,000 Budapest Jews into almost 2,000 apartment buildings: the yellow-star houses. Both the houses and their residents were forced to display the yellow star, and for half a year until the establishment of the ghetto, everyone in Budapest could see who the Jews were, and where they lived.
Together with Budapest residents and the cultural organizations, theaters and public institutions based in former yellow-star houses, we are holding commemorations at the 1,600 yellow-star houses still standing today. Starting in the early morning and lasting until late evening, the aim is to make this 70th anniversary visible across the city.
June 21 is also the Night of the Museums, and a number of prominent Budapest museums and cultural institutions are joining in with commemorative programs.
