The ESSL AWARD CEE 2009 is dedicated to the discovery and support of young creative talents in Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, and Slovakia. The ESSL AWARD CEE 2009 aims to support artists who are still in training. Collaboration with art academies is a central feature of this endeavor, as they are well-established centers for the training of future generations of artists.

The Award was founded by Agnes and Karlheinz Essl in 2005 in order to support art students in countries where BauMax is present. The ESSL AWARD CEE is conferred every two years.

A nine-member international jury shortlisted 10 of the works, which were submitted digitally in the fall of 2008, from each participating country. Selected works were shown at “Nominees’ Night 2009” exhibitions organized in the respective capital cities. Works included drawings and paintings as well as interior decoration, photographs, video films, and new types of media.

On the opening night, the jury selected three award winners from each country for the first prize of EUR 4000, the second prize of EUR 3000, and the Vienna Insurance Group Special Award of EUR 1000 as the third prize.
